What Levi Johnston Should Expect From Sarah Palin
The current exchange of words between Levi Johnston and the Palin’s can only be described as barrage this time, but the vocabulary gets increasingly hostile and indicates that Johnston and the Palins may indeed be on their way to a violent custody battle. While Johnston is still busy shaping a public opinion that the former vice presidential candidate is alienating his son against him, it is widely believed that the Palins are forming a legal strategy against Johnston that will protect their turf and possibly a run for presidency in 2012.
The last thing Sarah Palin needs at this time is an ugly custody war with the 19-year old father of her grandson. It is highly unlikely that she will simply roll over and hand Johnston whatever he wants. Common sense would suggest that a battle strategy is in the making and Johnston should be prepared and brace for impact. Learning and understanding his situation as well as networking may be a good idea, as so many other single parents have learned.
Custody disputes such as the one between Johnston and Palin are rarely resolved in an amicably way, at least as long as there is no compelling motivation for both sides and as long as a certain level of confidentiality is maintained. At this time, we see Johnston tingling through the media, indicating he has access to material that could destroy Palin’s career. Threats are part of the game, but Johnston is clearly playing with fire and that may not work against a powerful and well-connected opponent. Palin, at this time, is simply responding with brief remarks, frequently through her lawyer, stating that Johnston’s behavior is malicious and that it is simply inappropriate to discuss the custody matter in public.
It does not take much to predict that the Palins will try to stop Johnston from making his remarks very soon. Whether Johnston has a case of proving that Sarah Palin is alienating his son Trigg or not, it would be time for the 19-year old to take a step back and see what Palin has against him. In the end, the custody battle will be fought over evidence that is presented in family court.
There is a lengthy analysis of the potential case over at Angiemedia. The author wonders whether the Palins are “serial parental alienators” and lays out plenty of examples in which especially Sarah Palin has been the bully and tried to get her way with rather unfair measures by exploiting her political influence. It is too early to even suggest what may happen and what evidence both sides have. However, given the past, the author’s opinion that Palin may be engaging in a defamation campaign with allegations that may or may not be true, seems likely.
From the article: “Already Johnston is making innocent mistakes that could set him up as a target for vindictive harassers. For instance, he’s at risk for being wrongly accused of child pornography, as evidenced by [a] photo from [a] NYMag article showing little Tripp’s unclothed pubic region with Levi standing over him.” This may sound exaggerated to most of us, but then we also know that one of the worst and also effective tools in alienation are child abuse charges. It is reasonable advice to Johnston to be more careful about the publication of material that may expose him to such charges, even if they are false.
Divorce and child custody proceedings provide many tools to opposing parties and at least for now we hope that Johnston, if his claims are true, is aware of them: Expensive and time intensive filings are the least to be concerned about. He should expect search warrants, investigations by several government authorities, as well as a chance that there may be court order that he cannot see his child at all.
Of course, until the matter is resolved, we can only speculate. So it is reasonable to take all information relating to the matter with a grain of salt. But we would be interested what opinion Sarah Palin’s daughter has. So far we have only heard from Levi Johnston and Sarah Palin.
