Weekly Safety Recall Alert: 1 Million McLaren Strollers
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued half a dozen critical safety recalls relating to children since the beginning of this month. Here is our current update which includes Adventure playsets, Century 21 sweatshirts, Three Sisters baby hammocks, Easton Sports bicycles, McLaren strollers and MacPherson’s art easels.
McLaren Strollers
About 1 million units are recalled for a “hinge mechanism [that] poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.” 12 fingertip amputations have been reported. The affected strollers (models Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller) sold between 1999 through November 2009 for prices between $199 and $360.

Adventure Playsets
About 282,000 units are recalled for a plastic coated lumber on the horizontal ladder that can weaken over time due to rotting of the whitewood and turn into a fall hazard. 1400 cases as well as 16 injuries have been reported. The playsets were sold between January 2004 through December 2007 by Walmart, Toys R Us, Academy Sports, Menards, and Mill stores for prices between $300 and $600.

MacPherson’s Art Easels
About 10,000 art easels are recalled for a chalkboard surface coating that contains high levels of lead that violate the federal lead paint standard. The easels were sold by Art supply stores nationwide and online from July 2004 through June 2009 for about $75.

Century 21 Promotions Hooded Sweatshirts
About 17,000 units are recalled for a drawstring through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. The shirts were sold from September 2005 through September 2009 for prices between $25 and $35. Most selling stores are located in New England with two stores each in Seattle, Washington and Alaska.

Easton Sports Bicycles
About 6400 units with EA30 stems are recalled for a crack hazard. Easton bicycles with EA30 stems were sold by independent bicycle dealers nationwide from August 2007 through August 2009 for prices between $500 and $1200.

Three Sisters Baby Hammocks
20 units are recalled. According to the CPSC, the “hammock can flip over, posing a serious fall hazard and strangulation hazard to infants who become entrapped in the seat’s restraint straps while upside down.” The hammocks were sold by Three Sisters Toys online at ww.threesisterstoys.com from December 2007 through July 2008 for about $100.
