Michael Lohan Suicide Notes Untwittered
You can really write anything on Twitter today and if it is controversial enough, it will make Google News and, if you are lucky, even your local TV evening news. Yesterday, some notes from celebrity single dad Michael Lohan appeared on Twitter, apparently in response to reports that he is $15,000 behind in child support, which could be interpreted as suicide tweets. Lohan was in the spotlight once again, but now that those tweets are fake. Even ex-wife Dina bought the tweets, but asked Michael to drop by with a child support check before a jump from a bridge.
Everywhere you look, Twitter is praised as being a tool for the open communication of the future. Personally, I believe Twitter is given too much credit, but I can’t doubt the substantial impact it has on people’s lives. Take, for instance, Michael Lohan’s tweets yesterday. Apparently, the single dad twittered away, describing a family drama and a suicide attempt.
“Fiance just left me. My family hates me, I spent Thanksgiving with my mom. I just cant do any of this any more,” said one tweet, which was followed by, “Heading to the Brooklyn Bridge”, “Goodbye.”
Given Lohan’s public exposure, those tweets are explosive material by any measure. However, the tweets have been removed since and Lohan now denies any claims that he has twittered any of those notes. “This is not not me,” Lohan told gossip blog Shabooty.com in an e-mail. “I do not have and never had a Twitter and Twitter’s corporate office confirms that. My lawyers are investigating.”
This case lays out an inherent problem of Twitter where anyone can pretend to be anyone. In the same way, you can pretend that someone else is pretending to be you. The credibility of tweets? Your call.
The Twitter page that was previously assumed to be Michael Lohan’s Twitter page now states: “I do NOT have a twitter. I’m never on this thing. My lawyers are looking into this. God would not approve.” All previous tweets have been erased. Oh, and there is a tweet to ex-wife Dina that says “I’ll see you in court” and “15,000 my ass!” – which refers to reports that Michael Lohan is $15,000 behind in child support.
Dina previously wrote to Michael from what we generally believe to be her Twitter account: I’LL TELL YOU ONE THING IF YOU DO PLAN ON FLYING OFF THAT BRIDGE YOU BETTER GIVE ME MY RESTATUTION FIRST, LEAKING CALLS YOU TOXIC PARENT.
But then, you never know if that really was Dina or Dina will claim that she never sent those tweets.
