If we believe a new report published by the Family and Parenting Institute (FPI), today’s common structure of a happy family may be on its way out. The report focuses on families in the UK, but the outlined trend certainly applies to Americans as well.
In particular, the report predicts that the meaning of the term family will focus much more on a decentralized family, it predicts a change of the father’s role to much more involvement, and less involvement of the mother because of work commitments. The changes are driven especially by more single parent families: The percentage of children living in a couple relationship fell from 92% in 1972 to 77% in 2008, the report says.
The report also found that over the past 40 years, the amount of time fathers spend with their children has tripled. Within 12 years, a quarter of couples will be cohabiting rather than getting married. The aging population also means that more grandparents will be involved in children’s lives, the report says.
