There are just a few days left to ring in a new decade, so it is somewhat obvious that you will read a lot about top 10 decade lists over the next few days. And yes, there is also a top 10 Parents list – the St. Louis Today website was first to come out with such a list. Limiting an entire decade to just ten (types) of parents might be a bit difficult, so take this list with a grain of salt.
The publication lists military parents, Brangelina, celebrity parents, the Duggars, helicopter parents, Jon and Kate Gosselin, political parents, Rosie O’Donnell, Nadya Suleman and Heather Armstrong as the “top 10 parents” of the year – positive or negative. EgoTV runs a story about the five worst parents of the year, which includes the Balloon Boy family, Joe Jackson, Nadya Suleman, Jon and Kate Gosselin and Tiger Woods. On the positive side, the National Parents’ Day Council has selected the Duggar family as the parents of the year.
I have not found a parents of the year or decade list that would have singled out single parents as parents of the decade. Depending on your view, that may be a good or a bad thing. Good, because you are not singled out and you are considered a normal parent and part of the crowd. Sometimes, this is just how you want it to be. Bad, because we know that you have to be twice the parent of a traditional family to work against those statistics that claim that single parent children do not have the same opportunities as married family children.
You beat the odds every day. That alone makes you a parent of the year – not just for your children. On New Year’s Eve, take some time for yourself, lean back in a comfortable chair, reflect and be proud of what you have done and achieved in the past twelve months!
