Law makers in Tennessee are in a heated debate whether shared custody in divorces that involve children can be a common solution to deicide custody cases in the best interest of children. At the center of the discussion is the question whether it is reasonable that mothers are generally favored by courts to receive (full) custody of their children.
Proponents of a shared 50/50 custody state that children always benefit from a scenario in which both parents are available for the children. Also, such a solution would be a fair to fathers who want to remain actively involved in the lives of their children.
Critics, however, state that splitting children 50/50 is nearly impossible and may have bad effects on the children. For example, if there is a significant geographic distance between the homes of the father and mother, it will mean that the child would have to go to different schools.
The issue is up for vote next week.
