Number Of Single Moms Tripled Over Past Four Decades

The number of single mothers has been on a steady rise over the past decades. According to a recent press release by the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 9.88 million single mothers in the U.S. in 2007, which is up from 3.4  million in 1970.

The number of single dads in 2007 stood at 1.74 million, which adds up to 11.62 million single parents living in the U.S. (more recent data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau indicated, however, that this number may have climbed close to above 12 million in 2008.)

The data provided also indicated that the southern part of the United States had the overwhelming majority of single parents (4.71 million or 40.5%), while the Northeast had the least (1.99 million or 17.2%).
66.6% of single moms and 73.9% of single dads were employed in 2007. The unemployment rate was high in both cases, with 11.9% of single dads and 10.1% of single moms being reported as unemployed.  14.2% of single dads and 23.4% of single moms were officially not part of the labor force.
