In Numbers: Indiana Leads The Nation In Divorce Rates

I am always a bit skeptical of how useful statistics are to prove a certain point that comes down to individuals, but we all have to admit that they are interesting nevertheless. These new numbers recently released by the census bureau provide some information on divorce and marriage rates.

The bureau’s latest survey found that Indiana has the highest divorce rate in the nation overall, with seven counties listed in the top 50 counties published. Wayne (IN) has the highest divorce rate with 19.2%, followed by Monroe (FL) with 18.3% and Daviess (KY) with 17.0%. The report was published as part of the American Community Survey. The entire list can be found here.

Other interesting numbers:

The percentage of women 15 and over who have never married was 28.1% in 2008, up from 27.6% in 2007 and 27.3% in 2006.

legalThree-fourths of people who have ever been married have done so only once (75.7% of women, 75.4% of men). About one-in-five have been married twice (19.3% of women, 19.4% of men), and about one-in-20 have been married three or more times (5.1% of women, 5.2% of men).

In absolute numbers, there were 41,011,718 males (15 years and older) and 34,893,327 females who have never been married. 77,561,289 males were married at least once, while there were 89,487,073 females who decided that marriage was the way to go.

The press release with more data and access to tables and charts is published here.
