In Numbers: 400,000 Parental Kidnappings Each Year
MrCustodyCoach posted an interesting number about child abductions in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, between 300,000 and 400,000 children are abducted by parents each year. And no, the majority of these “kidnappings” do not happen during the divorce battle.
Interestingly enough, two thirds of the abductions were post-custodial offenses; mothers more likely to abduct when a custody order existed, while fathers were more likely to abduct when no custody order existed. Mothers were more likely to abscond with the children or otherwise deny a father’s visitation or parenting time and fathers were more likely to use force to take their children or to fail to return them from their visitation or custody period.
Depending on how nasty your divorce is or was, the grade of exposure to parental child abduction may vary. But the exposure can be limited. The blog suggests keeping a journal, making a list of possible suspects in advance, current photographs of your children and calling the police if there has been a threat. Read the entire post here.
