Ellen’s Tip of the Day: There’s a Lot More to Eggs!

What came first? Who cares on this day dedicated and devoted to a food considered to be both incredible and edible at the same time! That’s right, it’s ‘World Egg Day.’ Eggs have always had a sort of magic and mysticism attached to them since they are produced by bird linked with the skies above and the ancient deities that dwell there.

They are also considered to contain the compact essence of life and so have been revered, collected, eaten, buried and used in innumerable ways by man attempting to tap into their mysteries and alchemical opportunities. It is their ability to heal, however, that has captured the attention and imagination of cultures across the globe.

In the Caribbean, for example, eggs are thrown against a ‘magic’ tree as a sacrifice to the spirits who may have helped bring an illness to someone who is sick. This ritual is often accompanied by other offerings as well as singing and drumming.

Chinese grannies, on finding an infant ancestor ailing would take a bowl of rice, an egg and two incense sticks to a street corner and offer these gifts, incense burning, while repeating the name of the child over and over again. The Chinese also believed that they could stave off smallpox by eating the eggs of doves.

In parts of Northwest Africa, people who are ill inscribe invocations on hard boiled eggs and then eat them to affect a cure while the Germans have been known to make small holes on both ends of an egg and blow out the yolk and the white to blow out any infectious disease as well. Not unlikely or far-fetched, in many cultures it is believed that eating eggs is thought to encourage fertility.

If business is slow and money isn’t coming in, why not take a tip from shopkeepers in India and head out to a crossroads with some salt and an egg? While there, break the egg and throw the yolk and white onto the ground while taking pieces of the shell and the salt back home to burn in a fire.

Like someone before me said, this egg is indeed incredible while being very very edible! Scrambled eggs anyone?
