Good To Know: What Single Parents Do Every Day, Part 2

toysLast week, we posted an inspiring story from a father who felt the responsibility of a single parent, well sort of, when his wife went on a short trip with friends. Here is a follow up from a mother who describes her challenges when her husband went away for four days over a long weekend: “This wasn’t the first time I experienced a small glimpse of life as a single parent,” author April Klutenkamper writes. “But it was the point when I developed a sincere admiration for every parent who has ever had to raise a child on his or her own.”

April says that she is the mother of a 10-month old child and she is making the experiences most moms will make during the first month of her baby’s life. She says she has become a “professional one-handed diaper-changer who could compete in timed trials” and she can “catch hurled sippy cups in one fell swoop.”, But, in the end she admits that she also “never realized how much I relied on that extra person to share in the day-to-day responsibilities.”

There is only one part of one day April describes and to most of us, I am talking about single parents, it may sound trivial and some may scratch their heads over her complaints.

However, taken into perspective, and recognizing her conclusion that she found herself “thinking about all the single parents who live this experience every day and wondering, in awe, how they do it so well” should give every single parent a break.

What you do every day, no matter how little it means to you, and how frustrated you may be sometimes, you do an amazing job. Always know that and be proud of what you do!

Thanks to April for her article.
