Jacob, Emma Most Popular Baby Names In 2008

babyThe Social Security Administration (SSA) has released the most popular baby names for 2008. Jacob won the honors for the tenth time in a row for boys and Emma surpassed the usual favorite Emily, which held the title of the most popular girl name from 1995 to 2007.

There was not much change in naming popularity among the 20 most favorite names for babies born in the U.S. By rank, the five most popular boy names in 2008 were Jacob, William, James, George and Robert. On the girl side we have Emma, Isabella, Emily, Madison and Eva.

The most significant increase in popularity among the top 20 showed Aiden (from #27 to #16), Jayden (#18 to #11) and Alexander (#11 to #6). More popular girl names were Natalie (#17 to #13), Alexis (#19 to #15), Olivia (#7 to #6) and Madison (#5 to #4). You can see the full list here.

The government provides popular baby names going back to the year 1879, whereas the data gets less accurate the further you go back, especially before the year 1937, during which the Social Security Card was introduced to the American public. But just if you are curious, 100 years ago, the most popular baby names were John, William and James as well as Mary, Helen and Margaret.
