Ok, so we know that a decent day at a major museum can exactly do what we are trying to avoid here. I recently discussed with a spokesperson for the Field Museum in Chicago the ridiculous ticket price of more than $20 per person, in addition to $15 for parking, and was told that the museum felt its prices were “very competitive”.
Fine. But there are plenty of places out there that promise fun and education for much less money, sometimes even for free.
Key to finding those free museums or days when certain museum actually offer free admission is to scour websites for that information. Most museums in fact do offer discounted rates or free admission on certain days or during certain times. If you want to get an idea what might be available in your area, check out www.heyitsfree.net, which has an impressive list of free stuff, including museum admissions. Make sure you consult the website before your next museum visit.
In my case, I actually found free days for the Field Museum and it saved me more than $60.
Enjoy!
