Cut Your Cellphone Bill: Walmart Cellphone Service

CELLPHONESHaving a functional cellphone is one of the critical tools single parents need today in order to stay in contact with their children. Unfortunately all that texting, calling and Internet comes with nosebleed price tags. And if you have been looking for a way to cut down your cellphone bill, Walmart’s new StraightTalk service may be just what you have been waiting for.

Let me just mention that I do not endorse Walmart’s new service and I have no idea how well the service actually works. But the retailer’s price of $45 per month for an all-you-can eat package sounds enticing, especially if you are currently shelling out $150 per month for AT&T’s unlimited calling/texting service. Here is what you need to know before you consider switching to Walmart.

Let’s talk first about the upside (yes, there is a downside as well) first. For $30 per month you get 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 30 MB of data service (which should be good for checking all your email as long as you do not download movies or huge images every day.) $45 provide unlimited calling and texting and 30 MB of data. This compares to about $90 for T-Mobile’s all you can eat plan (includes unlimited Internet usage), which is offering that price to existing customers as part of a “loyalty” program. Typically, you may spend about $100 per month just on unlimited calling with the three big providers AT&T, Sprint Nextel and Verizon.

So Walmart is definitely aggressive here.

Here’s the downside. The StraightTalk service is not contract-based, which means that you are not locked into one of those nasty 2-year contracts, but you will have to renew your service every 30 days. StraightTalk is another brand of the prepaid service provided under the TracFone Umbrella, which also sells its service as Net10 and Safelink Wireless. While TracFone supports, technologically speaking, all types of phones you can buy in the U.S., your existing phone will not work on StraightTalk as the TracFone service is closely tied to TracFone devices. So you will have to buy a phone from Walmart: You can currently choose from three phones, ranging from $30 to $100 in price. There is no phone that offers a full Blackberry-type QWERTY keyboard and don’t even expect to find a touchscreen phone. If you choose Walmart cellphone service, you will have to compromise on the feature set of your next phone.

In the end, it is a barebones service for those who want to cut their cellphone bill. If you are among them, have a look, but also remember that dropping out of your current cellphone contract before the 2-year period is over will cost you – somewhere between $50 and $175. Market research indicates that 68% of cellphone users are currently locked into a cellphone contract.

  • I went with Net10 prepaid on the TMobile network and its been a real money saver. I just went to Target, picked out my phone (a steal at $79 for a Samsung slider) and minutes and I was off. I have a low minutes plan at the moment as I am trying out the company still, but saving more than $65 a month is a great reason to stay with it. If you're a low cell phone user or need a dependable back up, Net10 seems like a great option.
  • I never though I would enjoy and love a prepaid company as much as I do Straight Talk. The deal is just wonderful and its helping me save over $50 a month versus my previous carrier. Straight Talk's $45 unlimited use plan is great for people like me who are always on their phones and dont want to worry about overage fees. I hated having to deal with contracts and with Straight Talk, I have the benefits of major company without the details. I have a selection of affordable and trendy phones to purchase and the benefit of being on the stable and dependable Verizon network. I was even able to keep my old number so its even easier for family and friends to keep in touch. Seriously, Walmart can't make it easier and more affordable to have a cell phone.

I have Straight Talk on the Verizon network. Bought it at Walmart and it's an amazing deal. The Samsung Finesse is a very cool smartphone and paying only $45 a month for unlimited everything is the best deal going!

The best thing about Straight Talk is its simplicity. I am so tired of wading through funky phone bills with mysterious charges and fees.

I really appreciate the savings, of course, but not having those awful and undecipherable bills has been a great stress-reducer.

Wolfgang, nice article. If we can score some serious savings through Wal-Mart plans, more power to us. But for those of us already on other plans and who want to save, however, I wanted to mention the next step--how to significantly lower your current rates. I actually work for the consumer advocacy website http://www.fixmycellbill.com (powered by a company called Validas) where we slash the average cell bill by 22 percent. Validas acts as the wireless bodyguard protecting you against frivolous charges that over-inflate 8 out of 10 cell bills. You can find out for free if fixmycellbill.com can modify your wireless plan to better suit your usage by going to the website.

For more info, check out Validas on Fox News at http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/d... .

Good luck to everyone reading on cutting your wireless costs, especially in this tough economy.

This is great news! I am sooo going to change onto this Straight Talk plan as soon as I get rid of my contract. I am probably looking at savings of about $50 a month if I go onto the unlimited plan for $45.
I heard the coverage is really great too!
