Halo 3 Dominates
It’s easy to lose touch of what is going on in video games and it may be difficult for you and other single parents to keep track of what your kids are playing and what is most popular in any given month. Fortunately, there are market research firms that keep track of what U.S. consumer buy and we can provide that information to you.
In September, it was a sequel to Halo 3 that came out on top. And, for the very first time, the Playstation 3 was the most popular game console of the month.
Usually it is the Nintendo Wii that outsells both the Xbox 360 and Wii by a margin of at least 2:1, but in September it was the Sony PS3 that surpassed its rivals, thanks to a redesigned, smaller console and a price cut. The PS3 sold 491,800 units in the U.S., according to market research firm NPD; the Wii was a close second with 462,800 consoles and the Xbox 360 followed with 352,600 units.
Overall, the Wii now sold 21.7 million units since its launch in November 2006. The Xbox 360 is the second most popular console with 16.3 million units (but was launched one year earlier in late 2005). The PS3 has sold 8.7 million consoles so far in the U.S. since November 2006.
