Allison Nazarian: The Sliding Door Theory

Allison Nazarian

Allison Nazarian

I’m a smart girl. I’m kind of funny too.  And I’m not even too bad at doing stuff like opening the easier jars and changing light bulbs.  In fact, today I even cleaned out this disgusting, dog-hair-and-dust-filled vacuum thing that I had been dreading and putting off for months.

But there are certain things Mr. Ex did that I just won’t even approach. And boy, do I miss his mad skillz in these areas sometimes.

These “certain things” include, in no particular order:

1) setting the timer for the sprinkler system
2) setting the timer for this little waterfall thingy in the pool
3) opening really tough jars
4) anything toilet-related
5) catching and properly disposing of lizards that come into the house
6) dealing with the garage door when it’s moody or needs to be re-programmed
7) getting a (heavy) sliding glass door back on track when it somehow gets off track

I know what I do well. I also know what not even to try. And when it comes to this list, I so do not even go there.

And this is where my “Sliding Door Theory” comes into play:

Mr. Ex is a very reasonable guy. He’s a good guy.

He wants me to be comfortable, safe and happy. If not for anything else, because I am the mother of his kids.

As long as I am reasonable and flexible and respectful, he always seems to be willing to help me out in a bind. And by “bind” I mean that when anything from 1-7 above arises, I want to know that I have Mr. Ex in my corner, ready and willing to get that sliding door back on track.

Moral of the story? 1) Know what you can do well and focus on that (staying away from the other stuff) and 2) when you need help on those aforementioned can’t-do-if-your-life-depended-on-it things, find someone who can do them well and for heaven’s sake, be nice to them!
