Michael Jackson Created “This Is It” Shows For His Kids

michaeljacksonA documentary showing the final days of Michael Jackson is set to open in theaters next week. While director Kenny Ortega is widely criticized for misrepresenting Jackson’s state of health, other people, including Jackson’s choreographer Travis Payne reveal more background information, including Jackson’s motivation for a comeback.

Payne told MTV News that the musician saw a responsibility “to the earth and each other”. Reportedly, he was also excited to show what so many parents try to communicate to their children: How they grew up and what they enjoy to do: “[…] he was excited to do it because he was still young enough to do it and his children were now old enough to appreciate what it was that he had loved for so many years,” Payne said.

This Is It is based on 120 hours of footage recorded during the Jackson’s rehearsals for his 50 comeback concerts in London. The documentary shows Jackson’s final days and will open in some theaters next Wednesday, October 27, and in more theaters on Thursday. The film will be playing in 3000 locations in the U.S. and in more than 18,000 theaters globally. Sony Pictures acquired the rights to the footage for $60 million. It is expected that the movie will gross up to $50 million within the first five days after public release.

Sony plans to remove the movie after two weeks from theaters, but said it may extend the showings if there is enough demand.

Meanwhile, a protest group called “This Is Not It” has formed, stating that the documentary will not show the true Michael Jackson.

From the website of the group:

“The movie is made of a careful choice of footage taken during Michael Jackson’s last rehearsals for the ‘This is It’ Tour. Out of 110 hours of footage, a few scenes were selected in which Michael Jackson smiled and showed that, in spite of being in a dire state, he was still the greatest star in the world.

In the weeks leading up to Michael Jackson’s death, while this footage was being shot, people around him knew that he looked like he might have died.  Those who stood to make a profit chose to ignore it.  Friends and fans who had no financial interest, chose to address it and attempted to help him.

AEG, the promoters for ‘This Is It’, ignored the signs, ignored the pleas, and in fact, actively covered up the truth. What you will see on that screen is part of that cover up.”
