There is an interesting article that discusses the cost of a divorce. And before you enter into a costly divorce battle it is certainly a good idea to look into the potential cost and if your checking account is ready for it.
According to this article, the average cost of a divorce is now about $27,000, despite the fact that most divorces are actually believed to be resolved in collaborative ways. That, of course means that your divorce may be much more costly, if you go all the way.
Start with $300 to $500 per hour for a good law firm (which you typically have to retain for at least $3000), filing fees, and third party evaluators that participate in your case. Add everything up and get all the extras and you will look at about $35,000 to about $100,000 for the custody case alone, according to somewhat old numbers mentioned by Judge Stewart in The Child Custody Book.
Those extras include mediators that have a starting price somewhere in the neighborhood of $600 to $1500 to get the conversation going and court-appointed experts that could ring in at more than $15,000. Especially expensive are those custody hearings and full-blown trials that involve attorneys and experts for multiple days at a cost of more than $2000 each for every day.
Complex financial disputes can cost more than $50,000 as well.
