That advice, of course, has another side: There are things that you should tell your children during a divorce. Divorce is a time of confusion for your children, they are upset and they need your help to get through this difficult phase of their life, no matter how hurt or desperate you are.

Be realistic: It will be a difficult conversation and you need to be prepared as much as you can. Make sure your children are the first ones to know about the separation. They should not learn about it from others. When you first talk to them, set enough time aside and create a calm setting, with both parents being present. You need to limit your discussion to the most pressing topics. Do not overwhelm them with information.

There is an interesting article over at The Guardian, which outlines a new trend that combines hedge funds, investors and lawyers. Here is an interesting take on curbing rising divorce rates. The Malaysian state government and the Family and Community Development Council are offering troubled married couples who are on the brink of the divorce a free honeymoon to patch their marriage.

Maybe you’ve heard, but in case you haven’t, there is a relatively new trend in resolving family disputes calledCollaborative Family Law (CFL). Where traditional divorce litigation tends to be adversarial and focused on producing a winner and a loser, Collaborative Law is designed specifically to keep parties out of court and to reach consensus on a fair settlement.

One of the keys to the Collaborative process is that both parties and their attorneys agree not to go to court. In fact, the attorneys agree that if either client does end up deciding to go to court, both attorneys will with withdraw requiring their clients to retain completely new representation. This leaves clients with the option to go to court, if they determine that the process won’t work for them, but it motivates the attorneys to prevent that from happening by working toward an acceptable settlement.

You have to give Jon and Kate Gosselin props for the spectacular public divorce and custody battle. We are still wondering here if that is all real or if it is just a setup for a new reality show. Perhaps we are one day told that it was a new concept of reality show across all types of media.

According to the New York Post, the producers of Law & Order apparently felt inspired by Jon’s and Kate’s performances to create an episode after the couple. On October 16, an episode called “Reality Bites” will air. It is based on a reality show (duh!) titled Larry Plus 10 and a single dad who is raising 10 adopted special needs kids on his own after his wife is killed.

I am always a bit skeptical of how useful statistics are to prove a certain point that comes down to individuals, but we all have to admit that they are interesting nevertheless. These new numbers recently released by the census bureau provide some information on divorce and marriage rates.
